Fall writing activities first grade

Students write their own sentence explaining why they are special. To welcome students back for a new year. I hand out the cards and when you hear the line read that matches your card you get to come up and put it on the chart. I love seeing the kids take them out during read to self or read to someone time.

Then write "ingredients" and list the kid's names.

Organize the group so that every child has their own animal or it is disbursed evenly. How would you describe autumn to a Martian who had never visited Earth. Whatever you call them, they help the kids organize their thinking and I like that.

I have eight EAL students in my room, so practicing oral language skills daily is super important for them as well. The twelve activities are repeated for every theme so that the task only has to be taught once.

Just make sure that they put their name on their animals. I think that was the moment I decided to make some changes--for myself and my students. We have found that amazon has the best price for it.

The students followed the directions to make their own pumpkin glyph. However you decide to use them, the purpose is to practice decoding, fluency, and comprehension for your beginning readers.

I wrote out the single sheet fluency passage onto sentence strips and created comprehension picture cards that go with the fluency. This activity is similar, but takes it a step further by facilitating a sense of "thankfulness" you can write about as you visual journal and reflect on thoughts of gratitude with the four symbolic fingers "thankful four" aimed high toward the sky.

Shared reading is how I decided to start with a soft launch into passages.

By Friday, when we sit down to write, the ideas flow easily and they can concentrate a little more on conventions. First, I sent home a note asking parents to donate pumpkins and gourds to our classroom if they would like.

Sunday, October 28, Pumpkin Centers and Activities. I LOVE having my students write about our fluency topic. Did you know that our brain is actually programmed to see in borders. So I made up this little five senses fall book. What do you feel. The students used the magnifying glasses to observe the pumpkins and gourds up close.

I found this cute fall poem on Kinder Latino 's blog. And the kids have SO much fun with it, too. At the beginning of the year in Kindergarten, our babies struggle with handwriting…most of them, anyway.

What do you think the symbolism of fall is in relation to the human life span. Using a large piece of butcher paper, create your pictograph.

Then cover your bulletin board with yellow, gold, brown or orange paper, pin the artwork here and there at angles, and scatter the leaves in the spaces between. I also found a bulletin board set that focused on the attributes of cooperation, perseverance, respect, etc.

Scatter the leaves over the bulletin board in a random fashion. We also used the same cloth when we were studying Italy and made pictures with pasta and labeled the board "Pastabilities". I keep those words on our focus wall and then transfer them to the word wall.

The amazing Debbie Diller talks about this, too. This BB is great because it can stay up for several weeks in the fall, just change the papers every couple of weeks.

Write a funny, scary, mysterious, or dramatic story that uses the 'pumpkin in the wagon' imagery above. The themes are independent of one another and can be swapped to fit your needs. They are half sheets and become very well worn by the end of the school year. Each cupcake has the child's name and birthdate printed on it.
